Pfister will probably try to import goods by means of one of his usual devices. Amongst these may be mentioned the instructions given by Pfister to Cattaneo in the letter dated 4.6.17 to send goods destined for Switzerland corres- pondence transmitted by the Italian M.I. General 1637 of 27.10.17.)
In this connection it is to bạ noted that Germann & Co., Manila wrote to Fabbriche Riunite F. & E.Gilli, Piazza 7, Florence, on May 12 and 13, 1916, stating they auw with pleasure from Gilli'a çables of April 16th and the beginning of May, that the latter was disposed to open a letter of credit for £2200 required by Germann & Co., to effect shipment of stock. As shipment by the Messageries Maritimes seemed out of the question, attempta were to be made to ship by the Compania Transatlantica to Barcelona. The name of a consignee in Barcelona was requested as there was no difficulty in getting the goode from Barcelona to Genoa, so long as there was a firm in Barcelona able to supervise transhipment. Germann & Co., repeated a warning to the affect that shipment would be by their friend "Luis Hidalgo" and the letter of credit would have to be opened in his favour. (T.L. 08927). If not to Barcelona, it was suggested that shipment might be to New York as Germann & Co., had "done some business in knotted hemp with a Swiss firm via New York."
A most significant piece of evidence in support of the viaw that Pfister is merely acting for Pottstock of Bremen 18 afforded by a letter dated the 18th April 1916 from Germann & Co., Manila to R. M. Bergmann of Germann & Co. Hamburg. Previous letters refer to offers to Gill1, Truciolo and Pfister. This letter refers to Gilli, Truciolo and Pottatook and shows that hemp had successfully been shipped by Germann & Co., Manila to New York, through Italy to Pottstock, Bremen and Fohlen.
The material passages are as follows (translated)
"We received from Truciolo and Marseilles telegraphio
requests for offers in hemp. So far we have not answered gême, do we said before, we cannot ship to Marseilles, We propose &8 8001 66 we have something to offer, to make offers to Truciolo gif New York since it might be just as possible for him to receive goods
from New York to Italy as it was for Pottatook.
P.3. A telegram from Gilli has just arrived asking
us to ship his stock. G. is willing to open a credit on London to the amount asked for by us....
